Commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp
January 27 marks the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. It commemorates the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945. This year, we are particularly commemorating the 80th anniversary of that liberation.
On January 27, 2025, Their Royal Highnesses the Hereditary Grand Duke and Hereditary Grand Duchess, along with Prime Minister Luc Frieden, traveled to the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial in Poland to attend the international commemoration ceremony for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camp. The ceremony was attended by numerous heads of state and government as well as the last survivors of the camp.
They were accompanied by the President of the Jewish Consistory, Albert Aflalo, and the President of the Luxembourg Foundation for the Memory of the Holocaust, Laurent Moyse.
Following the welcome speech, former survivors shared their testimonies about their experiences in the camp. These testimonies were followed by prayers and a solemn candle laying ceremony, during which heads of state and government participated in front of the international monument honoring the victims of Auschwitz.
Around six million Jews, including Jews from the Grand Duchy, were murdered during the Holocaust. On this day of remembrance, let us remember the victims and renew our commitment against hatred, intolerance, and all forms of discrimination.
