Official opening of the Luxembourg Honorary Consulate in Kaunas

Published Tuesday February 13 2018

On 13 February 2018, the Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Mr. Conrad Bruch, officially opened the Honorary Consulate of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in Kaunas. The Luxembourg Honorary Consul is Mr. Ramunas Garbaravicius, who has Consular jurisdiction over the administrative districts of Kaunas, Alytus, Marijampole, Taurage and Klaipeda.

The Consulate is located in the historic building from which during the summer of 1940 Japanese Consul Sugihara issued transit visas from war-torn Lithuania through Japan for 6,000 European Jews fleeing the Holocaust. In his speech made at the ceremony attended by the Mayor of Kaunas as well as numerous other personalities, Ambassador Bruch underlined the importance of opening Luxembourg Consulates in Lithuania as testifying to the excellence of Luxembourg-Lithuania relations in the year during which Lithuania celebrates the centennial of its independence.
